Less food waste, more control
This facility pumped feed containing milk fat, protein, and vitamins to 100 feed stations for piglets. Feed integrity was the main concern, as the feed had limited shelf life and needed to be delivered without separation of the ingredients; otherwise, the piglets would not get the required nutrients, which would affect their health. The expert recommended the Seepex BN Range series, which are low-shear with variable flow controls. Each ofthese pumpswas equipped with a variable frequency drive and control panel, to help them meet the high-flow demand. The control system enabled changes in flow rates to accommodate production needs. Progressive cavity pumps are reputed for shear sensitivity.
Seepex progressive cavity pumps belong to the group of rotary positive displacement pumps. Each has two conveying elements with special geometry and off-centre rotary motion. The geometry of the rotor and stator makes enclosed cavities in the pump, and the rotor’s rotary movement transfers the medium for the suction to the pressure side.
The customer purchased the new pumps, combined in one turnkey package to make installation easy. Immediate results included less feed waste and higher flow control and feed monitoring. The pumps eliminated the labour-intensive feeding of individual stations, and their shear sensitivity reduced waste, as the feed did not get damaged. Centralizing the feeding station allowed easy monitoring of feeding rates, and the hogs ended up healthier.
