The purpose of a steam trap is to prevent steam from passing its point of use, and toallow condensate to be expelled as soon as it forms. Barnes & Jones thermostaticsteam traps do this very well. How it works
Thermostatic steam traps are balanced pressure devices that use vapour pressure,within a diaphragm or bellows, to open and close a valve in a modulating manner,dependent upon the temperature surrounding it. The trap is normally open to expel airand condensate. As saturated steam surrounds the unit, the volatile fill inside theelement flashes into a vapour, creating an internal pressure. This equalization ofpressures allows the element to expand to its natural length or “closed position”,preventing steam from passing its point of use. The presence of condensate will coolthe element and condense the vapour within, reinstating the vacuum, causing theelement to retract to its open position and allowing the condensate to drain from thetrap.
