Safety Cable by Bergen is the perfect aerospace fastener-retention system

Bergen Cableis approaching its 80th year as a top North American provider of cable solutions. A highlight of the companyʼs long history is its involvement in the development of Safety Cable, an essential fastener-retention system for the aerospace sector for more than three decades. Not only does Safety Cable serve as a convenient alternative to lock wire; it is also the safest, most cost-efficient, and most easy-to-install option for fastener retention in the industrial market.

Higher quality, lower assembly costs

Bergen and GE tested the new cable at the latterʼs plant and found that it reduced installation time by half, while offering higher quality and lower assembly costs. In the ensuing years, Safety Cable has become the standard fastener-retention system in the aerospace industry.

Safety Cable has four main elements:

• Safety Cable tool –Bergenoffers cable tools with diameters of .022, .032, and .04 and nose lengths of three, five, or seven inches. These tools come with 360-degree rotating noses, which allow easier use in nonstandard positions.
• Safety Cable –Lengths go from nine to 36 inches. Materials include 304 or 321 stainless steel, Inconel 600 for high-temperature or non-magnetic applications, and Inconel 625 for anti-corrosion protection. Bergen recommends self-looping cable for fasteners without holes; filler washers are available for fasteners that have oversized lock-wire holes.
• Ferrules –Bergen offers a spring-loaded magazine containing 50 ferrules. These come in the same materials and diameters as the cable does. Also available are elongated ferrules that allow proper retention of fasteners with limited clearance.
• Accessories –Examples: torque blocks, for periodic verification of tool settings to ensure correct tool operation quickly; precision torque wrenches, for use with torque blocks; cutter gripper tools, used to remove cable and lock wire safely and efficiently; and electronic load testers for tension and ferrule pull-off tests.
