Fire water main is corrosion-free 28 years later thanks to Denso
Nearly 30 years ago, Anglo American Platinum, a leading primary producer of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), used Denso products to protect the fire water mains at its precious metals refinery. The company recently excavated some of these pipes to assess the condition of the fire water mains, and determine whether maintenance was required to ensure the continued supply of fire water.
The results
During the inspection, the entire coating system was removed and the pipe surface was cleaned. What the team found was that no corrosion was evident since its installation in 1988 thanks to the use of theDenso Petrolatum Tape System, which includes Denso S105 Paste, Denso Petrolatum Tape and Denso MDP Outer Wrap.
The inspection reflected an excellent coating system, which was accurately applied to specification. This highlights the importance of recommending the correct coating system and applying the material in strict accordance with the specification.
After cleaning, the pipe was re-coated with the Denso Petrolatum Tape System using a 55 per cent overlap of the tape. A new six-inch tie-in was also added using the same Denso Petrolatum Tape System that was supplied back in 1988.
